Juanes Arrasa con 5 Latin Grammys & Breaks All-Time Mark with 17 Awards

On a night when the theme of change and cultural fusion echoed in lyrics, performances and acceptance speeches, a Colombian rocker who's become a voice for social issues walked away as the king of the Latin Grammy Awards:
The Shadow of Your Smile":

Houston proved to be a state of many stars on Thursday evening but it was Juanes who was the proverbial Texas-sized winner as The Latin Recording Academy honored the best and brightest artists in Latin music at the 9th Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards.
The night belonged to the 12-time Latin GRAMMY-winning Colombian pop rocker, who added five more statues to his mantle including the impressive trio of Record Of The Year, Album Of The Year and Song Of The Year, and Best Male Pop Vocal Album with the Best Short Form Music Video — breaking Alejandro Sanz's mark of 14.

In picking up Album Of The Year, Juanes was joined by the 9-time Latin Grammy Winner Juan Luis Guerra and his producer Gustavo Santaolalla, who took the opportunity to underscore that "the quality of the artist and the human being can go hand in hand."

In accepting the award for Song of The Year for "Me Enamora," Juanes graciously acknowledged the broad spectrum of his songwriting influences including tango master Carlos Gardel, rocker Gustavo Cerati of Soda Stereo fame, and Colombian salsa star Joe Arroyo:

Estefan performed "Mi Tierra," the title track form her 1993 GRAMMY-winning album of the same name, and "Oye Mi Canto" before being joined on stage by the legendary pair of Feliciano and Santana for the song "No Lloren."
Actor/GRAMMY winner Andy García introduced Estefan, the 2008 Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year, as "someone who knows that success is more than selling 90 million records and filling the largest stages in the world."

The jam featured Norteño artist Michael Salgado, vallenato artist Emiliano Zuleta, and tango artists Fernando Otero (who played the melodica) with Hector Del Curto on bandoneón (a button accordion), and Tejano star David Lee Garza.
In accepting her award for Best Female Pop Vocal Album, singer/songwriter García quipped, "A year ago I was at home watching this like a dream and now being here...."
Feliciano, in accepting his award for Best Contemporary Tropical Album for Señor Bachata, was touched and said, "I didn't expect this. I came here to be with my sister Gloria [Estefan] and [her husband] Emilio." Lets remember his talent here with Santana & Ricky Martin:

Brazilian gospel singer Soraya Moraes also racked up three Latin GRAMMYs including Best Christian Album (Spanish Language), Best Christian Album (Portuguese Language) and Best Brazilian Song.
In one of the evening's more emotional moments, Guzmán, who has battled back from a bout with breast cancer, performed a dramatic rendition of "Hasta El Final." Guzmán then picked the energy up for the provocative rocker "Soy Solo Un Secreto" — providing further evidence as to why she was once dubbed the Latin counterpart to Madonna :
Lo mismo sucedió con Jenni Rivera — the only woman nominated in the Best Ranchero Album category — performed a dramatic "Sufriendo A Solas" ("Suffering Alone") accompanied by a mariachi band led by her brother Lupillo Rivera. The former Rivera was then joined by Olga Tañón and a Lifetime Achivement award winning Vikki Carr for a supercharged version of "Cosas Del Amor."
Los Tigres Del Norte offered a passionate medley that reflected the band's Mexican roots. The set led off with "Somos Mas Americanos" ("We're More American"), in which they sang about the mix of Native Americans and Spanish people that mark the heritages of both Latin America and Mexico. The medley closed with the scorching double shot of "Sangre Caliente" and “Mis Dos Patrias." Escuchemos:
In bringing the evening's theme of meaningful words and songs full circle, the closing number "No Dudaria" ("I Wouldn't Doubt") featured an all-star international supergroup of Mexican artist Belinda, flamenco singer Antonio Carmona, Venezuelan singer Jeremías, Juanes, Spanish singer Rosario, Olga Tañón, and Puerto Rican artist Tommy Torres.

Gloria Estefan Named LARAS´Person Of The Year 2008

GLORIA ESTEFAN TO BE HONORED AS
2008 LATIN RECORDING ACADEMY PERSON OF THE YEAR

Star-Studded Concert And Tribute Dinner To Be Held During Latin GRAMMY® Week
On Nov. 12 In Houston

MIAMI (Aug. 19, 2008) — GRAMMY®- and Latin GRAMMY®-winning international superstar Gloria Estefan will be honored as the 2008 Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year, it was announced today by The Latin Recording Academy®. Estefan was chosen for her philanthropic, professional and cultural accomplishments and will receive the honor at a star-studded concert and tribute dinner on Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2008, at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston. A portion of the proceeds from the evening's tribute dinner will benefit the Gloria Estefan Foundation as well as St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. The prestigious event will be produced by 13-time GRAMMY winner Phil Ramone and will precede the 9th Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards, which will be held at the Toyota Center in Houston on Thursday, Nov. 13, and will be broadcast live on the Univision Television Network at 8 p.m. Eastern/7 p.m. Central.
"The Latin Recording Academy and its Board of Trustees are elated to recognize Gloria Estefan as an extraordinary Latina woman, humanitarian and talented musician who has made a global impact on music and culture," said Latin Recording Academy President Gabriel Abaroa. "She is one of Latin music's most enduring icons, and we are privileged to be honoring such a dedicated, generous, and gifted lady."

Estefan has been a force within the music industry for three decades with 22 albums and more than 90 million records sold. She began her career collaborating with the Miami Latin Boys band. Estefan became an integral part of the band and was essential in creating the group's new sound and by 1980, she and the group became known as Miami Sound Machine and were signed to a record label. They went on to release albums such as Primitive Love, which sold more than 3 million units in the United States alone and produced the hit singles "Bad Boy," "Words Get In The Way" and "Conga." The next two albums, Let It Loose (1987) and Cuts Both Ways (1989), were both worldwide chart-topping sensations, and produced such hits as "Can't Stay Away From You," "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You," "Anything For You," "1-2-3," "Don't Wanna Lose You," and "Get On Your Feet."

After a bus accident that left her partially paralyzed in March 1990, Estefan, against all odds, triumphantly returned to the stage with a 17-country tour and her chart-topping album, Into The Night.
In 1993 she returned to her Latin music roots and released Mi Tierra, which garnered Estefan her first GRAMMY Award.
She performed the official theme song, "Reach," at the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, which became the first single from a new English-language album Destiny.
Released in 2001, Alma Caribeña/Caribean Soul earned Estefan a GRAMMY Award for Best Traditional Tropical Latin Album

And a Latin GRAMMY Award in 2000 for Best Short Form Music Video.

Her most recent album, 90 Millas, pays tribute to the roots of Cuban music and gave Estefan the opportunity to work with fellow legendary artists such as Sheila E., Andy García, Israel "Cachao" Lopez, Johnny Pacheco, Carlos Santana, and many others.

She is a music leyend, her songs will stay with us for ever

Not only is Estefan an award-winning singer/songwriter and musician, she is also a compassionate philanthropist who established the Gloria Estefan Foundation, which aims to promote good health, education and cultural development. One of the main benefactors of the Gloria Estefan Foundation is the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis — the leading research center for spinal cord injuries. Estefan served as chairwoman for a capital campaign that raised more than 40 million dollars to build the Lois Pope Life Center neurological research facility. The foundation also raises funds for other organizations and has donated millions of dollars to a number of charities including the American Red Cross, UNICEF and the Miami Children's Hospital Brain Institute.

Estefan is the ninth Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year honoree and is the first woman to receive the honor. She joins a prestigious list of previous honorees, which includes Julio Iglesias, Ricky Martin, Juan Luis Guerra and Carlos Santana.

SELENA´s Hometown To Host The 9th Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards 2008!

When Selena began performing at the age of ten, her father became her manager and Los Dinos became her backing band. In 1983, she made her recording debut after appearing on popular the radio show of L.A. deejay Johnnie Canales. While Selena grew up understanding Spanish, English was her first language. Her first records were recorded in Spanish and she sang the words phonetically. After her music began to catch on, she began learning Spanish formally and by the time of her death, she was fluent in the language.

In 1987, she was named Female Vocalist of the Year and Performer of the Year at the Tejano Music Awards. Two years later she signed with EMI Latin and in 1990, she and Los Dinos released their eponymous debut album. Later that year she released a singles compilation, Personal Best, and she also released Ven Conmigo.

In 1991 the title track of the latter became the first Tejano record to go gold. Selena also released two more albums, including one of Cumbia music, Baila Esta Cumbia that year. Selena married Los Dinos´s lead guitarist and GRAMMY winner, Chris Perez in April of 1992. Other group members included her brother, a Latin GRAMMY winner too, Abraham Quintanilla, III, who played bass and penned many of her songs, and her sister Suzette, the drummer.

Selena won her first GRAMMY Award in 1993 for Best Mexican American Performance for her album Selena Live. That same year, she released an album of love songs, Quiero, and she also opened Selena Etc, a clothing manufacturing business.

In 1994, she made her feature-film debut in Don Juan DeMarco, in which she played a singer. Later that year, she and her band embarked upon a tour of New York, LA, Argentina, and Puerto Rico. Amor Prohibido was released in 1994; the record's title track won a Grammy and went gold. In 1995, Selena began preparing to make her breakthrough into the American pop mainstream.

In the spring of that year she was working on her first English-language album, when she went to a motel room in Corpus Christi, TX, to fire 34-year-old Yolanda Saldivar, the woman who managed Selena's boutique in San Antonio, and the founder of the Selena fan club. A few days before the confrontation Selena's father had unearthed paperwork proving that Saldivar had been embezzling from the fan club. Saldivar and Selena argued and as the singer left, she was shot in the back. Selena didn't die right away and managed to stagger into the lobby where she named Saldivar as the killer. An hour later, Selena died in a local hospital.

It was a death that rocked the entire Latino music industry. Saldivar was convicted for the murder of Selena in November, 1995 and sentenced to at least 30 years in prison.
A special service was held in the Los Angeles Colliseum where she was to give a concert. Less than a month later, Texas governor George W. Bush declared April 16, "Selena Day," in her honor. Dreaming of You, her final album, was released posthumously in the early summer. It became the first Tejano album to reach number one in America and was double platinum by the end of the year.

SELENA VIVE !
